Sloten - Corn mill Print E-mail

The current water gates date from 1768 (the Sneker or Woudsenderpoort gate) and 1821 (the Lemsterpoort gate). The bastion of the latter gate is adorned with the corn mill which was constructed in 1755. A mill was even located on this site in the Middle Ages. A small prison is also incorporated into the gate. Near the entrance to the cell there is a pillory as a reminder of the Spanish attack.

The rampart canons are also worth seeing. The local shooting club holds demonstrations near the mill every Friday evening during the summer months, following a loud proclamation by the town crier.

Sloten - Ramparts Print E-mail

In 1581, five bastions and four gates were constructed in Sloten: two water gates on both sides of the central waterway of Het Diep were built to receive boats for toll collection. The land gates served a similar purpose. There is a lovely view of the town from the Lemsterpoort gate from 1821. The Sneeker, or Woudsendsterpoort gate dates back to 1768.

Sloten - Picturesque Print E-mail

The quays of this idyllic town are paved with round cobblestones and the beautifully preserved historic merchant homes along the linden three-lined central canal, with their 17th and 18th-century neck and stepped gables, recall the town's former wealth. The reformed Church (1647) and museum housed in the 18th-century town hall are also worth visiting.
